Marine Protected Area (MPA) Community Coordinator

JOB PURPOSE
The Nuxalk Nation is seeking a motivated and dedicated Marine Protected Area (MPA) Community Coordinator to support initiatives focused on establishing Marine Protected Areas within Nuxalk Territory.
Nuxalk Stewardship leads a wide range of initiatives and projects, including marine planning and operations, with the goal of ensuring long‑term resource sustainability through ecosystem‑based management (EBM). The waters, lands, air, and plant and animal life within Nuxalk Territory are among the most diverse in Canada, providing significant cultural, social, and economic benefits to the Nation.
This position plays a vital role in supporting Nuxalk marine priorities, ensuring Nuxalk knowledge and values are represented in regional marine initiatives, and strengthening communication between partners and the community.

KEY ACTIVITIES
The Marine Protected Area Community Coordinator will:
- Work with a Team
Coordinate closely with the Nuxalk Marine team and report directly to the Marine Manager. - Attend Meetings
Participate in meetings as a Nuxalk Nation representative, contributing ideas, perspectives, and plans with project partners. - Make Plans
Assist with the development of workplans and reports to ensure projects are completed successfully, align with community priorities, and receive community approval. - Share Knowledge
Ensure Nuxalk Nation knowledge, values, and priorities are included in MPA initiatives and at MPA network tables. - Keep Track of Progress
Monitor timelines, deliverables, and milestones to ensure projects stay on track. - Talk to the Community
Support community information sharing, engagement, and event coordination related to marine protection initiatives. - Communicate
Help develop communication materials to share information about MPA projects with leadership, partners, and community members.
SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE (PREFERRED)
- Education
Minimum of a high school diploma; post‑secondary education in a related field is an asset. - Knowledge of Marine Protection
Understanding of marine protection and conservation in Canada. - Project Management
Ability to support projects from planning through completion. - Communication Skills
Strong written and verbal communication skills. - Teamwork and Leadership
Ability to work collaboratively, support team efforts, and demonstrate leadership when needed. - Technology Skills
Comfortable using computers and common software programs for reporting and documentation.
CANDIDATE SHOULD POSSESS
- Experience working with First Nations or Indigenous organizations.
- Knowledge of marine environments, marine protection, natural resources, and their cultural importance to the Nuxalk Nation.
- Strong leadership skills and the ability to communicate effectively with Nuxalk leadership, community members, and external partners.
- A willingness to learn about Nuxalk marine initiatives including:
- Marine Planning Partnership (MaPP)
- Marine Protected Areas Network
- National Marine Conservation Areas
The ideal candidate is self‑motivated, adaptable, able to work in a fast‑changing team environment, and capable of delivering projects within tight timelines.
SALARY AND TERM
- Two‑year contract
- 30–35 hours per week (part‑time may be considered)
- Wage is commensurate with experience
- Contract may be renewed at the end of the two‑year term based on project progress
The successful candidate will be directly employed by the Nuxalk Nation. EI premiums and employee contributions will be deducted from payments.
