Job summary
The Night Shift Team Lead – Support Worker is responsible for overseeing all overnight operations at CMHA (The shelter, Jubilee Place and Jubilee House), ensuring the safety and well‑being of clients and staff. In addition to standard support worker duties, this role leads the night team, manages emergencies, completes required documentation, and provides operational support to our two additional housing sites during night hours.
Duties and Responsibilities
Team Leadership & Emergency Management
- Act as the primary on‑site authority during the night shift, stepping into the manager’s role when required.
- Lead, mentor, and support night‑shift staff, including monitoring employees working alone and providing guidance.
- Take immediate charge in any emergency or unusual occurrence, coordinating response efforts and ensuring protocols are followed.
- Communicate all critical incidents, safety concerns, and operational issues to day‑shift managers at all sites before their arrival.
Inter‑Site Support
- Provide overnight coverage and support to staff at the other two housing sites:
- Monitor lone workers and conduct periodic check‑ins.
- Deploy staff coverage in the event of absences or shortages.
- Ensure consistent standards of care and safety across all sites.
Documentation & Reporting
- Oversee completion and accuracy of all nightly logs, incident reports, file notes, and client records.
- Review and sign off on documentation submitted by night‑shift staff, ensuring compliance with agency policies.
- Escalate unresolved issues or follow‑up items to the Program Manager in a timely manner.
Shelter Support Worker Responsibilities
- Conduct regular patrols of the facility, buildings, and grounds to maintain security and safety.
- Escort unwelcome visitors off the premises in accordance with policy.
- Observe and assess client behavior; intervene to manage disturbances or medical/behavioral emergencies following established guidelines.
- Provide guests with information about shelter rules, duties, and available resources.
- Perform routine housekeeping tasks (e.g., vacuuming, dusting, garbage removal) and minor maintenance (e.g., changing light bulbs).
- Monitor supply levels and report maintenance needs or supply shortages to the Shelter Manager.
Qualifications
Typical Skills and Abilities
- Proven leadership and supervisory skills, with the ability to make sound decisions under pressure.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, including clear documentation and handover reports.
- Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team.
- Physical capacity to perform security patrols and respond to emergencies.
- Proficiency in operating related equipment (e.g., telephones, radios, basic office software).
Requirements
- Two years experience in shelter or residential support work.
- Naloxone Administration, Emergency First Aid and CPR certification (or willingness to obtain).
- Valid Class 5 license and a reliable vehicle that is able to be insured in your name for business purposes.
