Blood Borne Infection (BBI) Harm Reduction Worker

BGC Williams Lake is seeking a compassionate and dedicated Blood Borne Infection (BBI) Harm Reduction Worker to join our team. The successful candidate will provide inclusive, non-judgmental support and services to individuals affected by blood-borne infections such as HIV, Hepatitis B, and Hepatitis C.

This role emphasizes health equity, youth-centered harm reduction, sexual health education, and trauma-informed practice, while maintaining a strong focus on personal safety and professional boundaries when working with at-risk youth and adults. The position supports vulnerable populations at higher risk of BBIs due to substance use, mental health challenges, sexual health vulnerabilities, and social or economic barriers.

Classification: Level four
Rate of Pay: $23.20 per hour, $1.00 wage supplement when using Class 4 driver’s license
Hours of Work: 35 hours a week varying schedule

Key Responsibilities

Administration

  • Maintain accurate and confidential client records and documentation in accordance with the Interior Health Contract.
  • Participate in team meetings and contribute to collaborative planning and service delivery.
  • Track and report on training sessions, outreach activities, and program outcomes.
  • Prepare and submit monthly program reports, including youth-focused harm reduction, sexual health, and safety-related initiatives.

Target Populations

  • Work with youth and adults at higher risk of BBIs due to substance use, mental health concerns, unstable housing, sex work, incarceration, or social isolation.
  • Provide developmentally appropriate harm reduction and sexual health education to youth, including safer substance use, consent, STI prevention, and healthy relationships.
  • Support individuals engaging in behaviors that increase BBI risk, including drug use and higher-risk sexual practices, using a strengths-based, non-judgmental approach.
  • Deliver services while maintaining awareness of personal safety, de-escalation strategies, and appropriate professional boundaries.

Community Engagement

  • Build and maintain partnerships with local health providers, schools, youth serving organizations, and community stakeholders.
  • Participate in initiatives such as the Interior Health Blood-Borne Pathogen Partnership Network.
  • Participate in committees and collaborative community efforts aimed at improving public health outcomes.
  • Engage in outreach activities using safety-informed practices, including situational awareness and risk assessment.

Health Programming

  • Develop and deliver harm reduction, BBI prevention, sexual health, and youth focused education programs.
  • Distribute prevention supplies such as condoms, safer-sex materials, harm reduction supplies, and educational resources.
  • Collaborate with Interior Health to ensure alignment with provincial harm reduction and sexual health strategies.
  • Facilitate peer-based and youth-inclusive support programs while adhering to safety protocols and best practices.

Health Promotion and Awareness

  • Strengthen community partnerships to expand harm reduction and youth sexual health initiatives.
  • Promote awareness of HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis, STIs, and safer practices through outreach, campaigns, and community events.
  • Coordinate workshops and special events with health professionals, including initiatives such as World AIDS Day.

Professional Development

  • Participate in ongoing professional development related to harm reduction, youth engagement, sexual health, trauma-informed care, and personal safety
    training (e.g., de-escalation, crisis response, and situational awareness).
  • Engage in regular performance evaluations to support professional growth and program quality.

Qualifications

  • Human Services Diploma or equivalent (minimum two years of post-secondary education).
  • Minimum two years of experience working with diverse, at-risk, and/or youth populations.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of harm reduction principles and sexual health education.
  • Experience or training related to personal safety, de-escalation, and risk awareness when working with at-risk youth and adults.
  • Current First Aid and Food Safe certification.
  • Class 4 Driver’s License preferred.
