What we need:
Reporting to the CAO, the Director of Economic Development leads the development and implementation of an
economic development plan and strategies for the Nuxalk Nation. The position is responsible for overseeing and
managing economic development initiatives for the Nuxalk Nation, including identifying new business opportunities,
promoting economic growth and resiliency, advancing economic reconciliation, and building strong relationships with
Stakeholders, Partners, Communities, Businesses, and Citizens to create mutually beneficial partnerships. This
position also supports various ministries in dealing with economic development related initiatives and will be
expected to work closely with Communications, Environment, Inter-Governmental Relations, and Resources staff.
Key Roles and Responsibilities:
• Develop and implement an effective and comprehensive economic development strategy and operational
objectives for Nuxalk Nation.
o Identify and evaluate potential business opportunities and partnerships that align with Nuxalk’s
economic development goals and objectives as well as ensuring economic viability.
o Provide subject matter expertise and work closely with Nuxalk’s leadership team to ensure
alignment between the Nuxalk’s vision and strategic priorities with economic development
initiatives.
o Actively participate as a critical member of the Nuxalk Senior Management Team to create
solutions that advance the successful, efficient, and effective delivery of initiatives, programs, and
services.
o Develop and implement the Ministry of Economic Development operating budget and ensure
financial integrity is maintained.
• Hire, lead, train and develop a team of economic development professionals to execute Nuxalk’s economic
development plan and objectives.
o Oversee the planning, development, and implementation of economic development projects,
including business and economic research and analysis, project management, evaluation and
reporting.
• Collaborate with other departments, ministries and other key partners within Nuxalk Nation and externally
to identify areas where economic development initiatives can support broader community development
goals.
o Build and maintain strong relationships with other First Nation groups, Nuxalk Council and
Governing Members, and key Stakeholders, including Indigenous organizations, government
agencies, and industry partners.
o Serve as a member or liaison for economic development groups, and external committees or task
forces that promote economic and community development at the local, provincial, or federal
level, as assigned or deemed appropriate.
o Represent Nuxalk Nation at industry events, conferences, and other public forums to promote
economic development opportunities in British Columbia.
• Assist with the negotiation and management of professional service contracts, property sales or acquisition,
and economic development-oriented negotiations, as assigned, and managing external vendors and
consultants in these areas of work.
• Serve as a member of various staff and advisory committees and deliver on other duties as assigned to
support the CAO’s goals.
Key Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
• BA in Business, Economics, or a related field.
• Minimum 5 years’ experience in economic development, including experience in community development,
business development, project management, and stakeholder engagement.
o A thorough understanding of the economic landscape in British Columbia, including the challenges
and opportunities facing Indigenous communities.
o Working knowledge with government funding programs and other sources of financing for
economic development projects.
• Strong leadership skills, with minimum 3 years’ experience in managing processes and mentoring teams to
achieve common goals.
o Knowledge of Indigenous culture, history, and issues affecting the Nuxalk community in British
Columbia.
• Demonstrated successful ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders, including Nuxalk
community, senior leadership, staff, government officials.
o Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build and maintain effective
relationships with key stakeholders, including other organizations and economic development
professionals.
• Strong oral, writing, editing, and presentation skills to engage all levels of internal and external stakeholders.
• Strong project management skills, with ability to prioritize multiple projects with tight deadlines, using
analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Strong working knowledge with MS Office products
• There will be a need to attend meetings and events which may require work and travel outside of normal
business hours.
o Valid class 5 BC driver’s license, clean driver’s abstract and have access to a reliable vehicle.
What you get:
A 35-hour work week; Monday to Friday 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM with a lunch hour. Salary ranging from $70,000 to
$82,215 per annum.
