Salary $80,000 per year

●     Weekly round-trip vehicle mileage from Kluskus IR1 to the Quesnel Band Office, or use of a company vehicle for this trip and for school trips.

●     Remote and Rural School Allowance of $500 per instructional month.

●     $1000 per instructional month bonus to cover the extra responsibilities of the Principal role.

Job Description

The Teaching Principal will lead our small, rural school, providing a tailored educational experience for a diverse group of 2 to 10 students. In this dual role, you will serve as the primary educator while managing daily school operations and support staff. The Teaching Principal will be in charge of creating a personalized, inclusive curriculum that meets the diverse academic, social, and emotional needs of our students. You will work closely with the Lhoosk’uz Dené community, families, and external partners to foster a nurturing, innovative, and safe learning environment. You will manage the day-to-day running of the school, including ensuring that it is operational for the beginning of each school term, with a functional facility, necessary materials and supplies, and appropriate staff in place. This position is on site and will require you to be in the Kluskus community Monday through Friday.

The Teaching Principal position is renewed on an annual basis subject to the completion of a performance review and adequate financial resources available to support the position.

Key Responsibilities: 

Curriculum Development and Instruction:

  • Design and implement a personalized curriculum that addresses the academic and social needs of the students.
  • Conduct assessments to identify individual student needs and adapt instructional strategies accordingly.
  • Plan and deliver lessons across various subjects, ensuring content is engaging, inclusive, and aligned with BC Ministry of Education
  • Provide targeted interventions, particularly in literacy and numeracy, to support students requiring additional assistance.

School Management and Administrative Duties:

  • Ensure the school is operational and safe at the beginning of each term, maintaining a functional facility with necessary supplies and staff.
  • Oversee daily school operations, ensuring a safe and welcoming environment for students.
  • Collaborate with support staff to coordinate resources and services for students needing additional assistance.
  • Implement and monitor protocols for privacy, safety, and critical incident management to protect students and staff.
  • Provide monthly reports for the LDN Leadership which includes updates on the school’s spending and finances, how school programs are progressing, data regarding student achievement and attendance, and personnel matters requiring serious attention.
  • Manage the school budget, establish timetables, oversee general discipline, ensure school safety, oversee the maintenance of school records, documentation, and correspondence to ensure compliance with regulatory standards.

Community Engagement:

  • Build strong relationships with students, families, elders, and the Lhoosk’uz Dené community to foster a collaborative educational environment.
  • Act as a presentable and professional frontline contact for all inquiries and communications pertaining to departmental responsibilities.
  • Facilitate workshops and community engagement sessions to involve parents and elders in the educational process.
  • Regularly update families and community stakeholders on school progress, program developments, and student achievements.
  • Maintain proactive public relations efforts to share successes and foster a positive school image within the community.

Policy Development and Compliance:

  • Develop, organize, and update educational policies to align with provincial standards and the cultural values of the Lhoosk’uz Dené
  • Ensure that all school operations, programs, and practices comply with relevant education standards, privacy legislation, and industry-specific
  • Advocate for and implement innovative educational programs and interventions that drive student success.

Financial and Resource Management:

  • Participate in developing and managing the school budget to ensure effective allocation of financial resources, while also ensuring adherence to financial
  • Coordinate resources and services to support both academic programs, food programs, and the overall school environment.
  • Secure funding through grants and manage agreements with external agencies to support school initiatives.

Professional Development and Support:

  • Manage, hire, and provide mentorship and professional development opportunities for support staff.
  • Foster a positive working environment that aligns with the culture and values of the Lhoosk’uz Dené Nation.
  • Creating a supportive working environment that upholds ethical practices and professional boundaries.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities 

  • Familiarity with Indigenous educational philosophies and traditional teaching methods that support the cultural values of the Lhoosk’uz Dené
  • Have comprehensive knowledge of the BC public school system and the ability to adapt practices to a small, rural setting.
  • Ability to design and implement individualized educational programs based on diverse learning needs and principles, especially for students requiring additional support.
  • Understanding of privacy legislation, relevant educational policies, and critical incident management protocols, industry-specific legislation, best practices, and policies relevant to small, rural educational settings.
  • Ability to engage effectively with students who may require additional emotional or academic support.
  • Excellent organizational abilities and capable of prioritizing tasks, making informed decisions, and managing workload independently.

Education and Experience

  • Hold a Bachelor’s Degree (preferably in Education) along with a Certificate of Qualification and a valid C. Teaching Certificate.
  • Possess a valid BC Ministry of Education and Child Care (MECC) Certificate.
  • Have 5 to 7 years of experience in progressively responsible roles within
  • Demonstrate proven experience in implementing programs and interventions for students with diverse needs.
  • Experience working with First Nation schools and educational programs—especially in remote communities—is considered an
  • Maintain a valid Class 5 Driver’s License and exhibit strong organizational and communication skills.
