Youth Forensic Psychiatric Counsellor – Permanent/30 hours per week

Job Purpose

Working with court adjudicated youth who require counseling and therapy who may have committed violent or sexual offences; youth who have offended and are experiencing post traumatic stress disorder as a result of sexual abuse or other family violence; youth who have offended and are experiencing drug and/or alcohol addictions problems; and youth in correctional facilities who are in need of mental health services.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Coordinates referrals for assessment and treatment including reviewing all new referrals to ensure required documentation has been received along with informed consent.
  2. Completes comprehensive psycho-social assessments for court-ordered and court-related referrals by interviewing the young person, their parents and other caregivers and professionals involved and collecting details of the youth’s social history and obtaining information concerning previous   assessments and involvement with other treatment resources where indicated
  3. Provides individual, family and group counselling and therapy to youth who may have offended and caregivers
  4. Liaison with mental health professionals, social service agencies, probation officers and other   collaterals to provide information about the role and mandate of Youth Forensic Psychiatric Services   and to ensure smooth working relationships
  5. Performs other duties such as training courses to improve skill and knowledge

Qualifications

  1. Possess one of the following: Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN), Bachelor of Social Work degree, bachelor’s in child & Youth Care, or Psychology with an emphasis in counselling
  2. Enrolled and active in a master’s degree in social work, Education Counselling, or Counselling Psychology
  3. Two years frontline experience in counselling adjudicated youth or in the mental health field
  4. Experience working with a high-risk population.

Working Conditions

  • May be required to work in close proximity to potentially aggressive, violent or otherwise unpredictable youth.

  • Must be physically fit to undertake duties as specified in job description.

Salary: $51.32/hour
