POSITION SUMMARY
Under the direction of Nuslhiixwta’s Program Manager and Nuxalk Nation’s Child and Family Services Director, the Speech and Language Assistant/Therapy Assistant provides speech and language services to daycare and preschool children to help them learn to speak and understand words better. You will work with the Speech and Language Pathologist to help kids with their speech sounds, vocabulary, listening, and social skills.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Help set up fun games and activities to practice speech sounds, vocabulary, listening, and social skills
- Work regularly with children one-on-one or in small groups in their current settings.
- Show children and their families how to do their speech exercises to reach the planned goals set by the SLP.
- Watch and listen during speech time and take notes
- Help keep toys and tools clean and ready to use
- Meet with SLP once a week to discuss your caseload and client progress
- Help with scheduling appointments for the SLP and other visiting professionals when they are in town.
- Catalogue all S/L resources and be responsible for lending resources to S/L clients
- Keep files of assessments, goal plans, reports, and documentation in a safe, secure place and up to date.
- Network with SLP and other SLP Community Partners on a regular basis.
- Other duties as assigned
- Take instruction and training as required to perform the job.
Education/Experience
- Minimum Grade 12 or equivalent.
- 1 – 2 years related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience in speech therapy helps (this is a plus!)
- Some experience or education in childcare.
- Experience working with or assisting children and families.
- Knowledge of Nuxalk Nation culture, values, customs and traditions and language.
- Knowledge of Infant and Child Development.

- Emotionally mature and capable of working on your own.
- Ability to establish trusting relationships and work effectively with families and extended families.
- Proven Interpersonal, oral and written communication skills and the ability to develop correspondence and reports.
- Strong Team Player with excellent problem-solving skills.
- Possess integrity with a strong work ethic with the ability to maintain confidentiality.
- Good communication skills
- Good computer skills
- Able to work with people of all cultures.
- Valid Driver’s License
- Have your own transportation
- Up to date Criminal Record Check
