Position Summary
The FASD Key Worker provides community-based, cost-free services to children and youth (to 19 years of age) living with FASD and their caregivers in the Bella Coola Valley. As the FASD Key Worker, you will assist families, professionals, and other service providers in their understanding of FASD by providing education, information and resources. Using a family-centered, strength-based, culturally sensitive approach, you will provide emotional and practical support to families. You will report directly to the Program Manager.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
This position will work with the Nuslhiixwta Team to coordinate intervention efforts in collaboration with other team members, as well as external partners.
- Supporting families in understanding and implementing the recommendations from the diagnostic team, other professionals, and service providers.
- Providing information, resources, and suggestions to support the implementation of strategies and activities to meet family identified goals and objectives for their children.
- Work with parents, family members, caregivers and service providers in identifying ways to adapt to the child’s environment in response to the individual child’s emotional maturity, and his or her executive and adaptive functioning.
- Planning and facilitation of a bi-weekly Family Peer Support Group.
- Establish and maintain effective collaborative and constructive liaisons/relationships with a variety of individuals and groups, including families, diagnostic and assessment teams, schools, and other agencies
- Enhance the understanding of professionals, service providers and the community to raise the awareness of FASD and the risks of consuming alcohol during pregnancy
- Maintaining on-going, accurate client records, submit monthly statistical data, meeting with Program Manager for clinical supervision and case reviews.
- Participate and Assist in Nuslhiixwta programs and community events such as: Family Luncheons, Playtime, Apcwakm Ceremony, Teddy Bear Picnic, Literacy Fair, Preschool Circus, Aboriginal Day, Halloween and other holiday/themed events.
Qualifications:
Education/Experience/Certification
- Minimum Grade 12 or equivalent.
- Experience working with, or assisting, at risk children and families in a First Nation’s community setting.
- Understanding of FASD as a brain-based physical disability
- Education, training, or experience in child development.
- Experience providing parent support for parents and caregivers of children and youth with FASD
- Knowledge of Nuxalk Nation culture, values, customs and traditions and language.
Personal Qualifications and Other Skills and Knowledge
- Clear Criminal Record Check.
- Must have current BC Driver’s License and reliable transportation.
- With physical requirement, the incumbent must spend a major portion of the work hours standing, walking and have the ability to lift program equipment and supplies for program delivery.
- Ability to establish trusting relationships and work effectively with families and extended families.
- Strong Team Player with excellent problem-solving skills.
- Possess integrity with a strong work ethic with the ability to maintain confidentiality.
- Able to work with people of all cultures
- Good computer skills
- Good communication skills
