Shift Schedule: Casual on call: Hours are from 10 am – 6pm Monday to Sunday – 7 days per week

OVERVIEW: ORGANIZATION
The Quesnel Shelter & Support Society is a non-profit society and is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors. The Society advocates for and provides minimal-barrier housing and support services to those in the Quesnel region who are low-income and who are hard-to-house for a variety of reasons, including lack of affordable housing, poverty, mental illness, substance misuse, racism, other forms of discrimination or abusive family situations.
MANAGEMENT/ORGANIZATION STRUCTURE
The Board of Directors is the governance body for the Society. The Cook reports directly to the Supportive Housing Coordinator/Shelter Coordinator and carries out a variety of duties related to the provision of food services for clients of Supportive Housing and/or Emergency Shelter. The Cook works in accordance with the mission and philosophy of Quesnel Shelter & Support Society.
POSITION OVERVIEW
The Cook develops menu plans, prepares meals, and oversees the operation of the eating and cooking facilities.
KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Develops a breakfast, lunch and dinner menu plan in accordance with accepted nutritional guidelines such as Canada’s Food Guide for Healthy Eating and the individual dietary needs of the clients.
- Prepares, cooks and serves meals and snacks, including those for special dietary needs and special occasions, in accordance with safety and health standards and the menu plan.
- Oversees the operation of the eating and cooking facilities and equipment and ensures their cleanliness and maintenance. Reviews the meal preparation needs of the organization. Informs Operations Manager of Equipment Purchases needed to meet those needs within approved budget limits. Maintains an inventory of all related equipment.
- Alongside the Operations Manager, finds deals, writes a grocery list and orders food items necessary for the preparation of meals. Ensures that purchases are within approved budget limits. Maintains an inventory of food and other related items. Stores food items.
- Ensures kitchen cleaning duties are up to health standards
- Performs other related duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS
- Education and Knowledge
- Grade 10, plus graduation from a program in institutional or residential quantity cooking
- Training and Experience
- One (1) year recent related experience.
- Or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
- Food Safe
- Occupational First Aid Level 1 & Basic CPR Certification

- Criminal Record Clearance – Vulnerable Sector
- Managing Hostile Interactions, Non-Violent Crisis Intervention, MANDT
- Mental Health First Aid, Naloxone, Trauma Informed training an asset
- Excellent verbal and written communication, organizational skills and ability to maintain detailed records
- Preserve a high degree of professionalism in tenant relations, particularly with regard to confidentiality and the privacy and respect owed to individuals
