Student Position: Invasive Species Outreach and IT Employee
TERM: June to August, 2017 (seasonal full time & dependent on funding)
WAGE: $17-19 per hour, based on experience and qualifications

Build your skills working with people, developing resources and making a difference in communities across the Cariboo. The Invasive Species Council of BC is seeking a summer student that is looking for new and rewarding challenges in an innovative and collaborative atmosphere. As an Invasive Species Outreach Employee, you will assist in the development and delivery of some of the Council’s programs related to invasive species education, changing behavior, and training. You will want to build stronger communication skills both written and verbal, be able to research and be a concise and clear writer.
The Invasive Species Council of BC is a charitable organization with an established network of partners and advisors across the Cariboo and the province. You will work with a strong and supportive staff team and have the ability to work with respected leaders and mentors across BC.
What will you do?
As an Invasive Species Outreach Employee, you will have the opportunity to assist on a variety of the Council’s initiatives and activities, including but not limited to:
Supporting the delivery of the Cariboo Invasive Species Outreach program – responsibilities include delivering invasive species outreach and education within the Cariboo regions to key audiences including community and youth groups, schools and first nations. You will help coordinate and deliver local invasive species education sessions, workshops, field tours and weed pulls and developing regional information and resources.
Some areas will include supporting Council’s behaviour change programs, including Plantwise, Clean Drain Dry, Don’t Let It Loose and others.
Supporting invasive species research in BC- responsibilities will include conducting a provincial literature review of recent and current invasive species research taking place in the province, assimilating and sharing this information as well as assisting with the coordination and delivery of the 2017 Invasive Species Research Conference that the Council is co-hosting;
Online and/or IT technical support- responsibilities will include supporting the enhancement of the Councils website, supporting in the development of a provincial online invasive species information center and enhancing our online training suite.
Engaging Youth- responsibilities will include, development of a youth framework that focuses on engaging youth in invasive species initiatives and increasing youth membership within the council; and
The successful candidates will be required to work a flexible schedule that may include some weekends.
Who are we hiring?
This position is funding dependent and will be supported by the Canada Summer Jobs (CSJ) initiative.
To be eligible to participate in the CSJ initiative, applicants MUST:
- Be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment;
- Have been registered as full-time students in the previous academic year and intend to return to school on a full-time basis in the next academic year;
- Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act3; and,
- Be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial/territorial legislation and regulations.
What skills do you need?
The outreach employee will be working with staff members, partners and the public and therefore need to be energetic, positive, outgoing, and confident. Successful candidates must be BC residents that are self-motivated, highly organized, responsible, and work well in a team. All applicants must have completed Grade 12 or equivalent.
Ideally, you will have a strong combination of the following skills:
Ability to engage effectively with members of the public including experience and interest in delivering public presentations;
Strong motivational skills;
Excellent oral and written communication skills;
Knowledge of invasive species and or natural resource environment
Experience working with youth and/or community groups;
Willingness to travel and possess a valid BC driver’s license;
Additional Assets:
Social media skills;
Have or are working towards a technical certificate or degree in natural resource science;
Have a background or experience in horticulture;
Knowledge of Community Based Social Marketing;
Current WCB Level 1 First Aid certification;
Experience with the Microsoft Office Suite, primarily Word, Excel and Power Point;
Experience in data collection, organization and management; and
Experience with report writing
