For the Sxoxomic Community School

 

General Accountability and Responsibility

  • The School Custodian will act as a Support Service for the Education Department.
  • The incumbent reports directly to and is supervised by the Education Director.
  • The incumbent will be responsible for custodian and maintenance duties for the Sxoxomic School building and grounds with occasional driving duties for student field trips.

 

Specific Duties

Building maintenance, janitor & some landscaping will include:

  • Maintains assigned areas to strict standards of cleanliness and neatness, at all times.
  • Cleans the activity room, classrooms, hallways, washrooms and entranceways in accordance to the cleaning schedule, this includes washing, sweeping, mopping, vacuuming and polishing.
  • Dusts the furniture, office equipment, windowsills, banisters, desks and bookshelves.
  • Emptying and cleaning waste and trash containers, daily and recycling bins and pencil sharpeners, as required.
  • Checking, daily and replenishing, as required the paper towel and toilet paper, and the soap dispensers.
  • Ensuring that all doors and windows of assigned areas are closed and locked during and after cleaning. Reports minor and major maintenance and security concerns and hazards to Director of Education. Checks equipment and furniture inventory, annually, as per instructions.
  • Maintains cleanliness and environmental safety of outside play areas, grounds, sidewalks, fields and lawns, at all times by collection and removal of garbage, litter and waste left by animals.
  • Ensures that all outside areas are free from pests, insects and animals that may endanger the safety of the children/students/staff and damage the grassed areas, trees, shrubs or plants.
  • Inspects playground equipment and fences daily and reports any damage or concerns to the Principal.
  • Prepares grounds for bedding plants, seeding and fertilization of lawns.
  • Mows, edges, weeds, seeds, fertilize and weed controls all grassed areas of the school property including lawns and fields, and maintains trees, scrubs, plants and hedges, as required.
  • Maintains the sprinkler system and ensures grassed areas are watered.
  • Maintains all grounds keeping equipment (including equipment for snow and ice removal) in good order and ensure the safe handling and storage of all hazardous material.
  • Monitors grounds keeping supplies and stock (including supplies for snow and ice removal) and provides list of requirements to the Principal.
  • Maintains cleanliness and environmental safety of outside play areas, grounds, sidewalks, fields and lawns, at all times by removal of garbage, litter and waste left by animals.
  • Ensures that all outside areas are free from ice and snow that may endanger the safety of the children/students/staff.
  • Inspects playground equipment and fences daily and reports any damage or concerns to the Principal
  • Prepares and maintains outdoor ice rink, cross-country ski trails and all paths to and from the school.

 

Qualifications

 

Experience

  • Previous experience as a custodian or maintenance worker, preferably in a school environment.
  • Considerable knowledge of commercial quality lawn, trees, shrub supplies for seeding, weeding and care; and snow and ice removal materials.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of pest/animal control techniques.
  • Physically capable and able to perform all duties, including able to climb a three (3) meter ladder.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills to work as a cooperative maintenance member of the Sxoxomic School staff team.

 

Education

  • Valid Class 5 BC Driver’s Licence.
  • Fire and Safety, Workplace Hazardous Material Information System (WHMIS) and Small Engine Repair.
  • Grade 10 or equivalent.

 

Requirements

  • Attend professional development and training courses as required to update and maintain a high standard of work performance
  • Attend Education Department staff meetings, regularly and Band Council Meetings, as required
  • The employee will be required to obtain their Class 4 driver’s license.
