Regional Trainer for BC Wide Program: Appetite to Play

Are you passionate about increasing children’s physical activity level as well as encouraging healthy eating?

If you answered yes, then we have an opportunity for you!

The YMCA of Greater Vancouver is looking for Regional Trainers across BC to deliver Appetite to Play workshops.  Appetite to Play was developed as a coordinated approach to build the capacity of early years providers to provide healthy food and physical activity environments and promote healthy eating and physical activity in early years settings. As a Regional Trainer, you would deliver Appetite to Play workshops in your home community to Early Year Practitioners. If selected, you will participate in 1 day of training on the Appetite to Play program and then will deliver the 3 hour training in your community on evenings or weekends.

Position Title: Regional Trainer, Appetite to Play

Term: Casual

Locations: Vancouver, Terrace, Smithers, Dawson Creek, 100 Mile House, Cache Creek, Whistler, Revelstoke, Golden

Shifts: One day (8 hours) of training will occur on a weekend. Regional Trainers will provide 3 hour trainings in their community on evenings or weekends.  If you must travel outside of your region for work, reimbursement will be provided.

Salary: $25.00 per hour

Start Date: April 2018

Appetite to Play is an initiative designed to support early years providers to enhance their knowledge, skills and confidence in providing environments that support healthy eating and physical activity. Appetite to Play is offered in 3 hour workshops across British Columbia and delivered to Early Year Practitioners.

Major Responsibilities:

• Attend 1 full day (paid) of Appetite to Play training

• Develop a thorough understanding of Appetite to Play program delivery model and resources

• Effectively deliver Appetite to Play training workshop sessions as per guidelines

• Participate in feedback surveys to support the ongoing development of the training

• Ensure the safety of all members, participants, staff, and property by following YMCA standards/policies/procedures

• Do outreach in your community to increase number of Appetite to Play workshops

• Perform other related duties as required

Requirements:

• Experience in group facilitation or delivering educational programs to adults, children and families

• Education in Early Childhood Education, Nutrition/Dietetics, Kinesiology, Recreation, Education, Adult Education, Public Health or related fields an asset

• HIGH FIVE training, and/or YMCA Healthy Child Development training considered an asset

• Excellent verbal communication skills

• Successful candidates will be required to provide a current and satisfactory Criminal Reference Check/Vulnerable Sector Search issued no later than six (6) months preceding your start date

The Invasive Species Council of BC (ISCBC) is a registered charity whose members are involved in all aspects of invasive species management across BC.

The ISCBC is working in partnership with provincial government and local community partners in Williams Lake and 100 Mile House to provide practical skills development and field experience in inventory, treatment and monitoring of invasive species, with a special focus on invasive plants. A special key component in the project will be working with provincial agencies carrying out survey, restoration and reclamation in wildfire areas. Also included in this program is assisting teams in gaining outreach and public presentation skills by developing invasive species presentations, displays and booths for presenting at a wide variety of community events and settings.

What does a Supervisor do?

With the support of ISCBC, the Invasive Species Supervisor is responsible for program delivery in one of three locations, including, but not limited to:

  • Develop, coordinate, manage and report on the local work plan
  • Supervise and support a team of three program participants
  • Maintain daily/weekly contact with Program Manager
  • Perform invasive species activities, including invasive plant, survey, inventory, control and reporting
  • Ensure correct safety and treatment procedures are used at all times
  • Ensure correct and safe use of all control equipment
  • Ensure all equipment is maintained and stored appropriately at all times
  • Ensure professional team approach during all field and office operations and at all public outreach events and presentations
  • Participate in orientation session, weekly planning sessions and joint review
  • Hold weekly safety sessions to ensure all relevant practices are followed
  • Input and ensure accurate entry of treatment data into Invasive Alien Plant Program (IAPP) database.
  • Ensure regular and complete project reporting
    Who are we hiring?

Invasive Species Supervisor will have proven field experience including, but not limited to:

  • Technical field records and data management
  • Strong commitment and knowledge to safety standards
  • Knowledge of local region and navigation and mapping skills
  • Invasive and native plant identification
  • Best Management Practices for invasives, including invasive terrestrial plants
  • Invasive plant management techniques, including use of herbicides
  • Experience in public education/awareness/outreach
    What skills do you need?

As an Invasive Species Supervisor you will lead a team of three people in field activities and in community outreach and extension on a daily basis. You need to be knowledgeable, outgoing, and confident. Successful candidates must be self-motivated, highly organized, responsible, work well in a team and be responsive to direction from the Program Manager.

Ideally, you will have a strong combination of the following skills:

  • Past field experience in field survey, inventory and/or layout
  • Past experience/knowledge on invasive plant identification and treatment
  • Past supervision and work planning experience
  • Valid Industrial Vegetation and Noxious Weed Pesticide Applicators Certificate or past experience
  • Valid Class 5 (or 4 ) BC Driver’s License
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Experience conducting field research or field operations and managing data
  • Ability to travel and work in variable environmental conditions
  • Strong and effective communications skills

Other skills that will help you with this position:

  • Ability to read maps and operate IPad with various GPS mapping programs
  • Experience working with online databases and/or IAPP
  • Practical field experience or certification, or working towards a technical certificate or degree in natural resource science or have graduated
  • Current WCB Level 1 First Aid certification preferred
  • Experience with the Microsoft Office Suite- Word, Excel or Powerpoint

Janitor – relief coverage

Job Title: Janitor- Relief coverage for weekends and 2 hours on Wednesdays
Reports To: Operations Coordinator / Executive Director
Hours of Work: 5-7 Hours/Week 

Wednesdays 2 hours    On-call/relief 5 hours week when needed

Job Purpose

The Janitor will be responsible for keeping the building in a clean and orderly condition, and will perform heavy cleaning duties (such as cleaning floors, washing walls and glass, removing trash, etc…). Duties may also include basic maintenance activities such as notifying management of need for repairs

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform general cleaning duties in Boys and Girls Club of Williams Lake building.
  • Sweep, mop, vacuum, dump garbage and recycle bins, perform all cleaning aspects of halls, meeting rooms, restrooms, kitchen, and program areas as well as wash walls and windows.
  • Responsible for vandalism repair and clean-up within skill level.
  • Maintain outside grounds (removes snow, ice, and debris, removes weeds, waters, etc…
  • Monitor need for equipment or building maintenance and repair and inform management of those needs.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding any staff or client records noticed during duties.
  • Lock building and sets alarm as required to ensure building security.
  • Perform all tasks in congruence with Boys and Girls Club of Williams Lake & District Policies and Procedures.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma/GED
  • Experience with janitorial or general labour
  • Highly motivated and able to work independently.
  • Ability to comprehend and communicate instructions orally and in writing
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to multi-task and establish priorities.
