The Canadian Red Cross Society, a non-profit, humanitarian organization dedicated to helping Canadians, as well as the most vulnerable throughout the world, is seeking a dynamic individual to join its Disaster Management Team. The Disaster Management Safety and Wellbeing (SWB) Program Advisor, under the direction of the Manager, SWB, will work in collaboration with CRC personnel, including case workers, to provide psychosocial support and protection to fire evacuees as part of a team within the mandate of the Canadian Red Cross. This includes addressing the immediate psychosocial needs of the fire affected population, including considerations for special populations and a focus on Indigenous Peoples, as well as building community capacity and resiliency to address longer-term recovery priorities.
Key Responsibilities:
Placing affected communities at the center and in partnership, CRC’s Safety and Wellbeing Program (SWB) aims to support community priorities through a community resiliency approach to enable recovery and address Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) priorities. This includes addressing the immediate psychosocial needs of the disaster-affected population, including considerations for special populations and a focus on Indigenous Peoples, as well as building community capacity and resiliency to address longer-term recovery priorities.
Implementing culturally-appropriate SWB services for beneficiaries, including co-case management.
Consulting with case work teams, knowledge sharing/mobilization regarding psychosocial support and direct psychological first aid with appropriate referrals.
Support to the SWB program and activities to ensure alignment with standards and objectives.
Education and Experience:
Completion of an undergraduate degree in social work, nursing, psychology with a minimum 2 to 4 years of job-related work experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience of taking care of others and working in teams
Case work and case management a strong asset
Experience in living or working in a cultural context other than their own a strong asset
Mandatory background checks:

Assets:
Background in psychosocial work, nursing, teaching, social work, youth engagement, public health is considered a strong asset
Training in Psychological First Aid, protection and violence prevention, and psychosocial support in emergencies
Knowledge and certification in crisis intervention, ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training), or similar preferred
Experience in working for the Red Cross/Red Crescent movement
Experience in working with large number of people and many demands
This position requires all candidates to be fluent in English.
Fluency/working knowledge in an additional language including Indigenous language is considered a strong asset.
Working Conditions:
The majority of the work is a field based position. Difficult and demanding working conditions are expected including the following:
Due to the dynamic nature of the situation there may be issues of access and mobility;
Adaptable living conditions;
Long hours of work in a demanding context with limited resources;
Stressful rapidly changing environment with limited information to make decisions.
Ability to respond during non-traditional hours (i.e. late night or weekends) and long hours of work in a demanding context
